Art became a paratrooper in 1943. His unit, the 511 Parachute Infantry Regiment, was sent to the Philippines for the Battle of Leyte in late 1944. The 511 PIR continued on with other Regiments to battles in Manila and Luzon while the 1st Battalion took part in the Raid on Los Banos, rescuing more than 2000 civilians held captive. The 511 PIR went on to Lipa while preparing for the raid on Japan.

When the war appeared to be nearing its end, Art and eight others were killed on August 12, 1945 making their way to Japan in a B-24 bomber. He was only 21 years old. The Justin Family is proud of Art's service and sacrifice.
