Tom Hesse enlisted in the Navy after graduating from high school in 1964. Following basic training, he was stationed in Washington, D.C. where he served on the military staff of President Lyndon Johnson. Tom served two years in Washington before being transferred to Vietnam aboard the USS Lowe. He received an honorable discharge from active duty in 1967, and continued his service in the Navy Reserves between 1967 and 1970.

Tom grew up in Detroit and moved to Northville with his wife Kathy in 1977 where they raised their family. He is the proud Dad to five daughters and four son-in-laws, and the proud Papa to eleven grandchildren.
