King Lee was born in 1926 in Kansas City, Missouri, to Chinese immigrant parents. The hardships of the Great Depression forced the family back to China, but King returned to the States as a young man at the end of WWII on a ship sponsored by the Red Cross. Just a few years later, in 1950, he enlisted in the Army. He was stationed in occupied Germany for two years, and then returned stateside to care for his ailing father, serving four more years in the Army Reserve. Years later, his children would be reminded of his military experience every time he assigned them to KP duty or made sure they made their beds with precision-folded corners. He was, and we are, proud of his service to our country.
