  • Michael J. Zafarana honorably served in the United States Army from August 1968 through December 1969, including deployment to the Republic of Vietnam during one of the most challenging periods in American military history. He was assigned to Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 2nd Infantry, 1st Infantry Division—widely known as the “Big Red One,” one of the Army’s most storied and decorated divisions.

While serving in Vietnam, Michael participated in active military operations under demanding and dangerous conditions. On July 6, 1969, he was wounded in action during combat against a hostile force. For the injuries he sustained in service to his country, he was awarded the Purple Heart later that same month, by direction of the President under the provisions of Army Regulation 672-5-1. This distinguished recognition reflects both the sacrifice he made and the courage he demonstrated in the face of adversity.

At the time of his medical discharge, Michael held the rank of Specialist Four (E-4), a role that reflects both technical skill and leadership within his unit. His service extended beyond a single moment of valor, as evidenced by the numerous medals and commendations he earned throughout his military career. These include the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device 60, Combat Infantryman Badge, Good Conduct Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, and the Marksman Badge with Rifle. Each of these honors represents a distinct aspect of his service—his participation in active combat, his discipline, his skill, and his unwavering commitment to duty.

Michael’s time in Vietnam came during a complex and often turbulent era for both the military and the nation as a whole. Through it all, he served with honor, dignity, and resilience, embodying the values of courage and commitment that define the United States Army. His willingness to put himself in harm’s way for the sake of others stands as a powerful testament to his character.

Following his military service, Michael has continued to demonstrate strength and perseverance, living with the lasting impact of his service-connected injuries. His story is not only one of sacrifice but also of enduring resilience.

Today, as a Northville resident for the past eight years, Michael remains a respected member of his community. His legacy of service, courage, and dedication continues to inspire those around him.

We honor and thank Michael J. Zafarana for his service to our country. His actions and sacrifices will always be remembered with deep respect and gratitude.
