Mary Jane volunteered as a registered nurse in the Air Force Reserve in 1958 and was assigned to a field hospital unit. Later she completed the Flight Nurse Course in San Antonio and worked in air evacuation from Japan and Europe between 1967 and 1981. Her final assignment was as a mobilization augmentee to the Chief Nurse at Wright Patterson A.F.B.
